Monday Morning Mish-Mash

15 09 2008

1. Ever notice how large blocks of time can disappear when you’re drinking? I went out with a group of friends Friday night and drank almost constantly for seven hours. When one couple left our last destination, I told them to call or send a text to let the rest of us know they made it home. In a matter of time that didn’t seem sufficient for them to have even left the parking lot, a text arrived telling me they had made it back–to their home an hour away. I swear it seemed like two minutes had passed.

2. Saturday night a couple of us decided to go see “Burn After Reading”. I had no idea what it was about but figured any movie with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, John Malkovich, and Tilda Swinton had to be pretty good. I was wrong. I hated it. It was over before I even knew what it was about. My younger brother, no doubt much hipper than I am, loved it. Maybe I’ve just gotten old and out of touch.

3. Sunday was the last day the neighborhood pool was open…which means fall is upon us, and another summer is gone. *sigh* I don’t mind fall…in fact, fall and spring are probably my favorite seasons, but it just means another year is almost over and Christmas shopping is right around the corner.

4. I left work on Friday and passed my usual gas station, where prices were holding at $3.50 a gallon or so. A half hour down the road, I saw gas at $4.59! I stopped and filled at the next station that had it for less than $4 bucks, but a few hours later, as I made an hour long drive back home, every station was either completely out of gas, or had it hovering in the mid-$4 range. Crazy hurricanes!

5. And speaking of hurricanes, on the radio this morning there was someone suggesting that–in cases like Hurricane Ike, where people were warned of certain death and told to evacuate but didn’t–if we have to go save them, they ought to get a bill for it. Sort of makes sense to me. If I do something stupid and have to call an ambulance, I know I’m getting a bill. What do you think?

I just stopped by your blog and thought I would say hello. I like your site design. Looking forward to reading more down the road.

Maybe you were drinking when you saw the movie??

I’m with you on #5. I have a problem with people that are capable of leaving but choosing not to and then requiring first responders to put themselves in danger to try and rescue them. Especially when you ignore a mandatory evacuation order and quotes from officials like “facing certain death”. I sound like a hard ass but isn’t there a point where you have to take responsibility for your actions.

Josh–thanks for stoppin by!

Woody–did you see it? And yes, I think they ought to say “evacuate, and if you don’t, good luck to ya.”

Thanks for the movie review. I was thinking about going to see it.

#5…..I told Trailerparken that exact thing. Bailing out people who are hit by disaster and had no choice to leave is one thing. But, taxpayers footing the bills for people who risk their own lives by choice is another.

Sending you an SOS email in a while.

TPB–None of the three of us who went liked it…in fact, the tape broke in the middle, took them a few minutes to fix it, and people walked out during the break. As to the morons who didnt evacuate–some of them had their children. I wonder if they shouldnt be charged with endangerment?

Ugh. Don’t mention Christmas or the retailers will start putting up decorations and playing that awful music.

Yes, they should get a bill if we have to save them. They were told to absolutely get out. There should be a stupid tax.

That picture just ain’t right.
Thanks for movie review I was wondering it looked”different”
I think that they should tell them tough shit you stayed you pay
I get on a rant about all the stores that already have Christmas stuff out It’s just now the middle of September I know it’s marketing but by the time Christmas comes I am soooooo tired of it all
and on that cheerful note.. Happy Monday

#5 Send them a bill. In Arizona they have the “Stupid Motorist” law (that’s really what it’s called) for when people drive into flash flood areas, get stuck and need rescuing. With a hurricane it’s pretty much the same thing, but on a grander scale. Perhaps a public caning would be in order too. 😛

It’s amazing how time flies when you’re guzzling liquor enjoying a few brews or cocktails with friends, lol.

These days, if a movie doesn’t leave me feeling better about myself and the world or have some sort of redeeming message, it goes to the bottom of the pile. No time here for anything else.

I totally agree with you about charging the morons that decided to ride out the hurricane like it was a roller coaster ride at Six Flags. I’ve finally concluded that these were exceptionally stoooopid people and I believe stupidity should be taxable (or at least made financially accountable), right? Then, we’d never see a deficit, would we? We’d probably also have less stooopid people after a while as well. I truly have no compassion for the idiots of this world.

Oh, then I saw a video out of Galveston where they rescued some baby squirrels from the flooding. What the blody hell is that all about? If they want squirrels, I can send them plenty of squirrels I’d love to be rid of. Dear God! You don’t think we’re going to have to pay for that rescue, do you? *SIGH*

if it’s a mandatory evacuation, yeah .. noone should be liable but the person who was dumb enough to stay .. they should get a bill and a foot up their ass.

i love the way drinking makes time fllyyyyyyy . . and it makes me flyyyy . .

Big Hair—have one for me!

Sista–I didnt realize how little gas stations must keep on hand…

TPB—shoot, Ive already got clients. One idiot in particular wants to be rescued about every other payday.

First off, you KNOW you’re getting old when you no longer go to the bar with friends who live an hour away. “Burn After Reading” has NO meaning! That’s why you didn’t “get it”. You should have gone in and just enjoyed the banality of it all. Christmas crap is ALREADY at your local mall. Hurricanes are the PREFECT excuse for the oil industry to raise gas prices…even if it hits no where near where they are drilling. And I agree…if you hear a warning telling you to flee or die and you don’t flee…then you are an idiot.

Alan…I guess that was my problem with it, I kept expecting a plot or for it to be “about” something. Maybe Ill give it another chance once it hits DVD.
